Margot McKinney

In 1884, a pioneering young John McKinney landed in Australia from his Irish homeland and established McKinney’s in Toowoomba, Queensland.

Mr. McKinney and his wife, Sarah, soon grew the business to be the premier suppliers of necessities and luxuries to the growing town and country market in Western Queensland.

Under the stewardship of the second generation, Kenneth McKinney – and later, his son, John Kenneth McKinney – the business grew to be the prominent department store on the thriving Darling Downs. Servicing a large and demanding rural and city clientele through both wholesale and retail business, the department store stocked goods such as food, sporting equipment, toys, boats, electrical goods, cosmetics, women’s apparel, imported English china and silverware, furniture – and, always, prestige jewellery.

In the 1980s, John and Anne McKinney expanded their business taking over Australia’s oldest jewellery company. They added prestige showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney City and Double Bay, Port Douglas and the Gold Coast to their existing stores in Toowoomba and Brisbane. John McKinney became the holder of a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the business prospered with the fourth generation of McKinney’s – Margot, Sally and Jane – all involved in the business.

2014 is a very special year for the McKinney family as it marks 130 years for the family business. Always synonymous with refinement and luxury the McKinney tradition of offering the finest craftsmanship, quality and design continues today.

The Margot McKinney international expansion through the important collaboration with the iconic Neiman Marcus in the United States is earning this fourth generation family business recognition from discerning clients around the globe.
